Free time here has definitely been much more relaxed and slow paced than I am used to in NYC. Santa Rosa is a great town, but a town nonetheless. Week to week there has been a lot of reading (I just finished "One Hundred Years of Solitude") and a lot of watching football/soccer and the Knicks. This has been a much needed change of pace, but admittedly does not give much to write about.

Luckily, the other weekend we went to the Copán Ruinas which are Mayan Ruins only an hour and a half from Santa Rosa and a UNESCO World Heritage site. I went with a couple other people from the organization, and it was super interesting. I can't say I am able to relate much of the history as we did have a guide but it was all Spanish speaking, and while I can understand quite a bit, archeological terms are definitely testing the limits of my Spanish. However, every so often the guide would turn to me and hit me with pure conjecture that I could understand. It was a couple weeks ago so I can't remember any of the exact quotes, but he seemed to be working with the theory that a large part of the downfall was the aristocrats had to many wives, so he would throw out a "many wives means angry peasants." I leave it to the more historically inclined to access the truth of those, but regardless of the tour the actual ruins were quite amazing. I'll include some pictures below but they had a massive staircase with a lot of the history of the city was carved into it. The only problem was a lot of the coolest stuff was "con los Britanicos" because I guess they funded the excavation which soured a bit of the experience.

Now that the world cup has started I would say almost all of my free time is consumed by watching that, and even though Honduras is far from qualifying, it has been great to be in a country where the everyone cares about the sport, so looking forward to enjoying that after work for the next couple weeks.
