The Laidlaw research experience has taught me how unpredictable research can be. I came into Laidlaw with many assumptions about how my research question should be answered. While reviewing my first draft of interview questions, I realized that some of my questions were leading. Preconceived notions I had about my research question led me to create  questions that would prime my participants  to answer a certain way. However, my mentor reminded me that the beauty of research lies in the unknown.Upon speaking my mentor, I revised my interview questions to be more open-ended to  ensure that the Black Women I interviewed can freely express their personal view on slam poetry. I am now beyond grateful for the opportunity I had to listen to their unfiltered narratives about who they are, their craft, and their experiences.
