The Power of Community: Reflections on My Six Weeks as a Laidlaw Scholar
Looking back at the six weeks I have spent as a Laidlaw Scholar, the one word that comes to the forefront of my mind is community. From connecting with the Laidlaw community at Barnard and Columbia to interacting with the global network of scholars, I have come to appreciate the profound impact a supportive community can have on personal and academic growth. Engaging with these diverse groups has broadened my perspective, enabling me to learn from the experiences and insights of others while contributing my own.
My research on the economics of street food vending in Delhi has been a transformative journey. Delving into the intricacies of this vibrant sector, I have uncovered the complex socio-economic dynamics that govern it. Street food vending, a cornerstone of Delhi's culinary and cultural landscape, provides livelihoods for countless individuals. Through fieldwork, interviews, and data analysis, I have gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by vendors. Issues such as regulatory hurdles, health and safety standards, and economic pressures have come to the forefront of my study, revealing the resilience and ingenuity of these entrepreneurs.
Beyond academic insights, my research has reinforced the value of community support in navigating these challenges. The vendors I interacted with emphasized the importance of local networks and relationships in sustaining their businesses. This mirrors my own experience as a Laidlaw Scholar, where the sense of community has been pivotal in fostering my development. The collaborative environment has provided a platform for exchanging ideas, receiving constructive feedback, and forming lasting connections.
