When I visited the Spotlight Podcast Studio, the first thing I noticed was the students themselves. Moving with confidence, they arranged equipment, fixed audio, re-angled the lights - a space that felt built for a professional team. It looked nothing like your typical classroom, greenscreen covering one wall, while on the other: a large window to the sound booth. Co-hosts Alex and Charlie at ease under the bright lights, relying on practice and research to draw stories out of their guests. A photographer emphasises the importance of her university degree, an artist discusses how he helps youths find better futures through art, a poet chooses to work in public spaces. I quickly realised that this podcast is not a series of interviews - it is the oral retelling of what it means to be a creative in County Durham. It voices the anxieties, the lack of opportunities, the lack of spaces, the lack of interconnectedness, yet at the same time, prove that none of this has to be permanent. It gives hope to those who do not believe a creative career is possible here. Most of all, however, the guests bring a sense of community, including those often excluded, discussing the importance of space and mentorship, how each one has succeeded through the help found within the community they give back to. Help, in their words, does not mean not avoiding difficulty, it means having the opportunity to overcome them.  

Alex and Charlie, along with every student involved, have woven a tapestry of tales: when you step back, you find it traces the path of what you need to succeed in a creative career. Opportunities, spaces, funding but most of all - a supportive community who recognises the importance of the arts in creating culture and ever-improving our world.
