Hello everyone!

My name is Zena, and I am a first-year Economics student at NYU Abu Dhabi. I am excited to be joining the Laidlaw Scholars community and to spend the summer exploring a research project at the intersection of artificial intelligence, education, and language learning.

One thing that has always defined me is curiosity. I enjoy asking questions, exploring ideas outside my comfort zone, and trying to understand how people think, learn, and make decisions. Although I study Economics, some of the most rewarding experiences I have had at university have come from stepping beyond my major and engaging with completely different fields. From studying the impact of AI on the fashion industry during J-Term to exploring questions of human behavior, communication, and learning, I have developed a strong appreciation for interdisciplinary thinking.

I grew up in Doha, Qatar, before moving to Abu Dhabi several years ago. Living in diverse communities and meeting people from different cultures has taught me the value of listening to perspectives that differ from my own. It has also made me increasingly interested in how individuals learn, adapt, and interact with the world around them.

As a researcher, I would describe myself as curious, reflective, and open-minded. I enjoy challenging my own assumptions and approaching new topics with a willingness to learn. One aspect of my current project that particularly excites me is that I am entering a field where I do not have all the answers. In fact, I am researching language learning strategies despite never having learned a second language as a student myself. Rather than seeing this as a disadvantage, I view it as an opportunity to approach the topic with fresh eyes, ask thoughtful questions, and learn directly from the experiences of others.

Outside of academics, I enjoy meeting new people, exchanging ideas, and learning about different experiences and perspectives. One of the aspects of Laidlaw I am most looking forward to is connecting with scholars from different disciplines, backgrounds, and universities. I am excited to learn from your research journeys, leadership experiences, successes, and challenges.

I look forward to getting to know all of you and seeing the incredible work that this community will produce over the coming months!
