LiA Week 3 Reflection
What went well?
This week, we increased our work on the nearby university campus. We’ve engaged in teaching students, as I’ve led our team in further training. Although there were a couple of hiccups due to health issues. We were able to successfully complete a macro-event: a city tour for new students around Khon Kaen. Logistics have been flowing much more smoothly as we continue to support the ongoing work here.
What could have been done differently?
As fatigue started to set in this week, I began to crumble at the edges administratively. I wish I had better communicated with my staff team and students about scheduling. Everything still rolled smoothly, but more time spent on administrative tasks would likely go a long way in the role I’ve been given. I feel like I could be delegating roles better in outreach to students or through the local church.
What did I learn about myself while working with others?
I got to explore my strengths more this week. I am an extremely very vision-oriented person. This week, as we organized a church cleanup and continued to teach on campus, I was able to share my vision with many others on our team. I could see that it’s easy to galvanize others into action if I share my vision with them. In leadership, I think it’s critical to have a strong vision. So this week, I truly enjoyed leading with a vision and shepherding others along in that way.
What did I learn about leadership?
I once again realized leadership hinges on the humility of the leader. Setting the example in service to others alongside zeal and organization gains the respect of those I’m leading. But even further, at a heart level, I think it’s critical to truly care for the welfare of those you lead. The shepherd-like care of a leader shows itself to be true in both the mundanities of cleaning and the excitement of a larger city tour. Team members are able to notice such qualities in a leader.
What do I want to develop or focus on next?
I hope to close things out well next week by intentionally focusing on logistics and administration. I would like to ensure that work also carries on well after I leave.
