It has been three weeks since I came to Santa Barbara in order to work under the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. Last Wednesday, I participated in Sadako Peace Day, taking on the role of Master of Ceremonies. In addition to making remarks at the beginning of the program, I guided the flow of the ceremony by introducing every speaker after.
Sadako Peace Day commemorated 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Sadako Sasaki's story, a young girl who died from leukemia as a result of the bombing in Hiroshima, is a lasting symbol of peace and a reminder of why we need a world free of nuclear weapons.
Attached is a picture of the podium from the event where I made my remarks. I'm looking forward to the next half of my LiA. In addition to making progress towards a resolution to designate Santa Barbara as a nuclear-free zone, I will soon be in Japan for the Choose Hope Symposium, where I will be able to meet with youth and nuclear peace advocates from all over the world.
