LiA Week 2: Research
In Week 2 of my immersive experience at Who is Hussain, I delved deeper into understanding the local needs of Hong Kong. Guided by the insights gained from "The Academy", I conducted research to identify key areas requiring attention, leading me to uncover three main challenges facing Hong Kong: refugees, environmental concerns, and the ageing population.
Refugees:
Refugees and asylum seekers in Hong Kong face severe financial difficulty and difficult living conditions. Refugees in Hong Kong are not protected by the government and hold the status of “illegal immigrants”, even those who are known to be at risk of torture or persecution upon returning to their home countries. Refugees remain in Hong Kong until they are granted resettlement by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), a process that often takes years.
Due to their status as illegal immigrants, refugees are not allowed to work, instead, they are given a monthly stipend of around USD380, of which half is given to rent. Hong Kong being ranked THE most expensive city in the world for living, such restricting subsidies are not sufficient at all.
Environment:
Hong Kong, like many urban centres, faces environmental challenges such as pollution, waste management, and habitat degradation. Recognising the urgency of environmental conservation, I have planned events focused on sustainability, such as clean-up drives, to promote eco-friendly practices within the community. By engaging with local residents and organisations, we aim to instil a sense of environmental responsibility and drive positive change for a greener Hong Kong.
Ageing Population:
More than 20% of Hong Kong’s population are above 60 years old, and this rate is expected to continue increasing. The ageing population in Hong Kong is a demographic trend that brings about unique social and healthcare needs. To cater to this segment of the community, I have planned events that prioritise the well-being and support of the elderly. These events will include activities such as wellness sessions and social gatherings at elderly homes to address the challenges faced by the ageing population and promote intergenerational bonding.
By aligning our events with the specific needs of Hong Kong, I am confident that Who is Hussain can make a meaningful impact on the local community and contribute towards positive social change.
