As my first week with Make_Sense in Mexico City draws to a close, I have been reflecting on the highlights and challenges I have faced. Since I arrived on Sunday evening, I have met lots of new people, watched lots of football, eaten lots of good food, and tried (and largely failed) to remember my A Level Spanish skills.

This week has marked the beginning of my Laidlaw summer project, and involved meeting the organisation ‘Genera Territorios’, which I will be working with. My small group of 4 Laidlaw Scholars began designing our project, which will involve an offline resource to contribute to the ‘Everyday Economic Strategy’ of women in Amatlán and other rural areas of Mexico. Our meeting with the organisation was helpful in gaining more clarity on the expectations of our project, and understanding of the specific context and experiences of the women who we are hoping to empower. A particular favourite moment of mine was a visualisation and meditation activity led by our organisation, which, whilst we nearly fell asleep (jet lag struggle), was valuable as an immersion exercise.

Yesterday, the whole Make_Sense Laidlaw group went to visit the recycling centre at ‘Rennueva’, an organisation that some of the Scholars are working with. It was valuable to gain insight into what other people in our Laidlaw group will be working on, and the positive impact they will be having. I learned a lot more about recycling, through a tour by the CEO of the organisation, and a visit to their interactive museum, shown in the picture below.

Whilst this week has been full of fun and advances in the working space, the main highlight has definitely been the people; it has been great to connect and bond with the other Laidlaw Scholars. Being surrounded by such inspiring people from all around the world, and making new friends over good food has really helped me to settle in here in Mexico. I am grateful to share this experience with this group of people, and excited to see what the next 5 weeks has in store!
