LiA Week 1
For my Leadership-in-Action project, I chose to travel to Ubud, Bali in Indonesia where I am serving as a volunteer teacher and counselor for Empathy School's summer program. Last summer, I spent my time on campus researching how instruction of Latin impacts youth literacy rates throughout New York City. While I am at Empathy School, I will be teaching my students, ranging from kindergarten to primary school ages, some beginner-level Latin and about Greco-Roman mythology and leading visual arts and movement classes. The makeup of the school is quite diverse with students coming from Indonesia, other parts of Asia and even a couple from the US and Canada. Working directly with this young population and incorporating aspects of Latin instruction is really how my work this summer connects with my research from last year, however I am more excited about the prospect of interacting with an entirely different community and culture than NYC.
This is the students having lunch - the school is all-vegan and 100% waste free.
Although this is only my first week in Bali and Ubud specifically which is a town in the Gianyar regency of Bali, I have learned so much about the culture here and it is really quite beautiful. I am staying in a villa with a host family, Made and Ayu, who greet me every morning with a home cooked breakfast and some coffee or tea. Here is the view from my room!
I have also really enjoyed walking around Ubud center and visiting the nearby Hindu temples as my family is also Hindu. Ubud center has these great places to eat called warungs which are local Indonesian homestyle food spots. Here is the meal I had tonight from Warung Sun Sun!
