For my second summer, I am working as an Immigration Legal Services intern at Project Rousseau in the heart of Times Square in New York City. Project Rousseau offers full-scope, pro bono legal services to newly arrived young migrants and families with children, alongside its many other services like mentorship, academic, and social support to young New Yorkers.
My work will consist mostly on following Asylum and SIJS (Special Immigrant Juvenile Status) cases, interviewing clients to write and translate their affidavits. I'll also do some ad hoc document reviewing, translation, interpretation, and research. One of the reasons why I decided to stay in New York for my LiA is because of how intrinsically connected my research project was last summer to New York City and its specific migrant population. I have had the pleasure to work with Project Rousseau in the past, and it only made sense to continue supporting the community of mostly Spanish-speaking, newly arrived migrants I dedicated last summer to study. Project Rousseau helps clients from all over the world, and emphasizes in providing them with full-scope support, prioritizing human connections and development. I am excited to learn more about diverse communities around the world, and to help them tell their stories. This picture is part of my daily commute to work—the bright lights of Times Square.

Sounds like such meaningful work, Gersely! It’s amazing that you’re continuing to support the community you researched last summer in a 1-1 setting. Project Rousseau’s mission and your role there seem like a perfect fit. Wishing you a wonderful summer!
Very interesting and important work! Looking forward to hearing about how spending a second summer in NYC doing research is.
