Just under two weeks ago, I touched down in Medellín with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. I didn’t quite know what to expect—arriving jet-lagged and a little nervous, I made my way to Indie-Universe, the hotel and very millennial coworking space I’ll be calling home for the next six weeks. Little did I know how quickly that initial uncertainty would melt away.

From the moment I arrived, I was met with such warmth and generosity. The team here has been nothing short of amazing—open, supportive, and passionate about the work they do. Their kindness turned my nerves into genuine excitement for the journey ahead. Whilst my fellow Laidlaw scholars have been amazing, so much fun, and fortunately, much better at Spanish (which has been a lifesaver more than once).

This past week, we were introduced to the two organisations we’ll be working closely with: Picacho con Futuro and Mi Barrio Mi Sueño. It’s hard to describe just how powerful their work is—supporting vulnerable communities, amplifying local voices, and helping build a more inclusive and empowered Medellín. Being welcomed into their spaces and seeing the tangible impact they have had has been incredibly humbling and inspiring. We have begun the process of planning and implementing our ideas with Picacho with a particular focus on sustainability, which I am very excited to see to fruition.

As for Medellín itself, it’s impossible not to fall in love with this city. The people are amazing, the food is incredible, the weather is perfect, and the energy—especially at night—is contagious. Every day feels like a new adventure, and I’m so grateful to be experiencing it alongside such passionate and thoughtful people.

Such a good articulation of the first two weeks here!
