My Learning in Action (LiA) project consisted of volunteering as a Chinese language teacher at a Chinese academy in Azerbaijan during the summer vacation. The project aimed to support the academy's mission of promoting Chinese language education and strengthening cultural understanding between China and Azerbaijan. Through this volunteer role, I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge of the Chinese language in a practical educational setting while contributing to the learning and personal development of students from diverse backgrounds.

The primary objective of this project was to assist students in developing their Mandarin Chinese language proficiency across the four core language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. To achieve this, I planned and delivered lessons that were tailored to students' varying levels of language ability, learning styles, and individual needs. I prepared teaching materials, facilitated classroom discussions and interactive activities, provided constructive feedback on students' performance, and encouraged active participation in the learning process. Beyond language instruction, I also introduced aspects of Chinese history, traditions, festivals, customs, and contemporary society to help students gain a broader appreciation of Chinese culture and foster intercultural awareness.

Another important objective was to develop my own professional and personal competencies through meaningful community engagement. Working closely with students, fellow teachers, and academy staff enabled me to strengthen my communication, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and classroom management skills. I learned how to adapt my teaching strategies in response to different learning needs, maintain student engagement through creative instructional methods, and create a supportive and inclusive learning environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and practising their language skills.

Throughout the LiA experience, I encountered both opportunities and challenges that contributed significantly to my personal growth. Teaching students with diverse language backgrounds and varying levels of motivation required patience, flexibility, and continuous reflection on my teaching practices. I became more confident in public speaking, lesson planning, time management, and providing individualized support to learners. This experience also enhanced my intercultural communication skills by allowing me to bridge cultural differences and promote mutual respect and understanding through language education.

The outcomes of the project extended beyond my own professional development. By supporting students in their Chinese language learning journey, I contributed to improving their confidence in communicating in Mandarin and increasing their understanding of Chinese culture. The volunteer work also supported the academy's educational objectives by creating a positive, engaging, and collaborative classroom atmosphere that encouraged continuous learning. Through this experience, I gained valuable practical teaching experience, developed a stronger sense of social responsibility, and reinforced my commitment to lifelong learning, cultural exchange, and community service.

Overall, this Learning in Action project allowed me to integrate academic knowledge with real-world practice, while making a meaningful contribution to language education and cultural exchange in Azerbaijan. It strengthened my teaching abilities, expanded my professional skills, and deepened my appreciation of the important role that education plays in fostering international understanding and cooperation.
