An Overview of this Week's Research Activities:
What was the plan and how did I execute it
- After meeting with my mentors individually, I was able to collect their comments and implement them into my paper thoughtfully. Instead of trying to account for all recommendations at once, I underwent four rounds of revisions by reading my paper fully each time, going through changes on a mentor-by-mentor basis. If grammar was the issue, those edits would be done quickly, but if certain sentences needed to be reworded or an area needed further explanations, I would spend much more time trying to research alternative methods. Since this paper is lo large, it took my a while to complete this revision process, but it was all worth it in the end.
Anticipated Plans for the Following Week:
What are my project aspirations moving forward
- With this second week dedicated to the revision of my research paper, my anticipated plans will revolve around revising my poster . By the following week (07/03- 07/07), I want to be at a stage where I can say that I've thoroughly made changes to my poster and am working on final touches.
Accomplishments and Goals
Specific tasks
- I was able to FINISH going through the comments left by faculty advisor.
- I was able to also account for the comments left by the Assistant Faculty Director, Colleen Dougherty and my two other mentors in Michigan, making the necessary changes in my paper.
- Although I thought this process would take more than five days, I surpassed my own expectations and was able to accomplish all the self-revision by Friday, June 30th. I then sent my paper back out for a secondary round of comments. continuing the great pace that will lead into the final week of this fellowship.
- I was able to attend one group cohort events on June 28th.
- I participated in this week's CRF-organized research workshop. The topic for this session was brainstorming "high-level ideas" for next summer's Leadership in Action project
- I met with my faculty advisor, Professor David Burk of the Economics Department at Georgetown University, again, on Thursday (06/28) where we discussed how much better my paper has become since the initial read, and the small changes that still need to be made to reach the "end point" for this project.
- Fulfill my 40 hour a week work requirement by taking the Georgetown University Transportation Services (GUTS) buses to the Georgetown Law Center and working from 9-5 everyday.
Possible Challenges?
What were my setback(s), if any, and the steps that need to be taken to address this issue
- The only setback I had was figuring out how to implement the suggestions left by my mentors whilst preserving my own voice and the underlying intentions of this project. However, It was all a matter of being extra diligent and making each content area sound as fluid as possible. Besides these smaller obstacles, the rest of the revision process went fairly smooth.
Thank you for reading the updates for Week 5 of my fellowship research project, I look forward to describing where I am this time next week.
