An Overview of this Week's Research Activities:

What was the plan and how did I execute it

  1. When looking at the overwhelming amount of work that was necessary to complete the project of my choosing, I quickly realized that diligence was the only characteristic I should invoke. Mediocrity isn't, nor shall ever be, an acceptable attitude coming into programs such as the Laidlaw Scholars Network. So, I created a concrete, yet demanding, schedule that had this first week serve as my research week. From collecting books, articles, case law and survey materials (domestic and foreign) to synthesizing all the information and subsequently arranging all my sourcing into subcategories for my paper, this was the time to roughly visualize how my deliverables will be and what I would like to highlight to everyone interested in my work.

Anticipated Plans for the Following Week:

What are my project aspirations moving forward

  1. Having this first week be dedicated purely to research and discovery, my second week is a time for application. I hope to have the following week (06/12 - 06/16) be the stage where I begin to write the research paper in its entirety.

Accomplishments and Goals

Specific tasks

  1. I was able to gain access into Georgetown University's Law Center and the Edward Bennett Williams Law Library to conduct all my research in a safe, organized, and empowering learning environment.
  2. I had the intention to finish all my research by the first week. Whether it meant before Friday afternoon or right at Sunday night, I was determined to get everything  done irregardless of any other commitment I may have had; and I did just that. I surpassed my own expectations and was able to accomplish all that pre-planning today (0/09), by noon, setting myself up for a great pace that will lead into the following week.
  3. I was able to familiarize myself with the GU Law Campus structure, how to check out and return books, and not only how to search for, but pick out the correct texts from the corporate law section of the library.
  4. Meet with my faculty advisor, Professor David Burk of the Economics Department at Georgetown University, on Thursday (06/08) where I went over my plan with him and received the green light + praise on how far along I had come already.
  5. Fulfill my 40 hour a week work requirement by taking the Georgetown University Transportation Services (GUTS) buses and working from 9-5 everyday.

    Possible Challenges?

What were my setback(s), if any, and the steps that need to be taken to address this issue

    1. The only setback I had was figuring out what to pull out from a federal law that had 1,100+ provisions under various subcategories. However, I was able to find patterns in the writing by the Congressional Committees of both the House of Representatives and the Senate and create my own categories that would highlight the most important sections from the act itself.

Thank you for reading over the updates that I just gave for Week 1 of my fellowship research project, I look forward to describing where I am this time next week.
