Introducing myself

My name is Ruby Blaney and I am from Liverpool. I am a first year BEng Mechatronics and Robotics student at the University of Leeds. This summer, I am undertaking a Laidlaw research placement working with the Franka-Emika Panda robot arm, originally developed in Munich, Germany.

I am working on a robotics project focused on imitation learning, where I develop software to control a robot using a VR interface, collect and process demonstration data, and train AI models to replicate tasks. This involves working with tools such as Python, ROS, and PyTorch, as well as simulation environments before testing on real robot hardware.

Through this project, I aim to develop a deeper understanding of intelligent robotic systems and how machine learning can be applied to real-world automation challenges, such as manufacturing, assistive robotics, and potentially medical applications. This experience will allow me to build on my first-year engineering knowledge and apply it to industry-relevant problems, while also strengthening my skills in programming, system integration, and problem solving.

I am particularly interested in pursuing a career in medical robotics - in the direction of robotic limbs. I aspire to recieve a DAAD scholarship and do my Medical Robotics Masters degree in Germany.

Outside of the academic field, I enjoy reading and film. I am a member of the film committee at my university as film is a passion of mine.
