Tertiary education shapes the leaders of tomorrow, and throughout my journey as a Laidlaw Scholar, I’ve come to appreciate that true leadership extends far beyond competence alone. While many leadership programs emphasize skills and strategy, the Oxford Ethical Leadership Workshop reshaped my understanding of what it means to lead—rooting effectiveness not just in ability, but in moral character.

Leading with integrity isn’t just about doing what’s right; it amplifies persuasiveness and fosters lasting impact. One key insight from the workshop was the importance of cultivating virtues while guarding against excess or deficient vices—such as arrogance or timidity—that can undermine leadership. This isn’t a passive process; it demands consistent practice, self-reflection, and intentional growth.
In a world where shortcuts and compromises are often tempting, ethical leadership requires vigilance. It’s easy to slide down a slippery slope, gradually eroding one’s principles. But I’ve learned that integrity is non-negotiable. Storytelling, for instance, can be a powerful tool to reinforce values, creating environments where ethical behaviour is celebrated and upheld. By anchoring my leadership in integrity, I not only mitigate risks but also build a reputation rooted in trust.

The Laidlaw Scholarship has also deepened my commitment to global citizenship. At the North American Laidlaw Scholars Conference, I was inspired by the groundbreaking research and service projects of my peers—projects addressing pressing global challenges, from climate change to social inequality. Their work reminded me that leadership isn’t confined by borders; it’s about recognizing our shared humanity and taking responsibility for the world we inhabit.
Moving forward, I will carry these lessons with me. As an ethical leader, I strive to uphold the highest standards in every endeavour, whether in academia, professional settings, or community initiatives. I’ll continue to ask myself: How can I lead with empathy and integrity? How can I contribute to a more just and sustainable world?
The Laidlaw Scholarship has equipped me not only with skills but also with a renewed sense of purpose—to lead ethically and act as a global citizen, regardless of where my path takes me.
