  1. How have the workshops and discussions on leadership this week changed your understanding of what leadership means?

One of the main ideas brought up within the meeting was the idea that leadership wasn't a role but rather a behavior. I found this really interesting because it helped me reframe my idea of my own role when coming into collaborative projects. Rather than forcing myself or someone else to be assigned as the only leader, I reflected on how multiple people could have and exert leadership qualities, and even assigned leaders aren't really "leaders" until they are able to exert these qualities.
  2. How might you imagine applying one model of leadership during your Laidlaw summer on campus—either within the Laidlaw cohort or beyond this community? While we often associate leadership and leaders with seniority, how might leadership be modeled among individuals who are among the youngest people on campus (i.e. you!)?

Leadership doesn't just come from seniority: it can also come from being proactive, communicative, and understanding, and willing to take action to help other people when those who are assigned to be in positions of power don't recognize what is missing. One way I see myself applying leadership during this summer is proactively communicating with my own research group, and offering to organize events or strategies when we are assigned tasks by our PI.
