Costa Rica Fieldwork 2022
On the 20th June, I sat nervously watching the departure board in Newcastle airport, unaware that I was about to embark on adventure of joy, learning and self-discovery.
In the months leading up to my trip I was very apprehensive and often felt overwhelmed. I had massive imposter syndrome - why would an accomplished academic want to work alongside me, a first-year undergraduate?
But...I was brave and took the leap into the unknown. As soon as we landed in Costa Rica, I felt the nerves melt away - it was time to grasp the opportunity with both hands and throw myself into the project. Within a few days of arriving, I was tasked with learning all the ecological field techniques I would need to collect data. I was inquisitive and constantly asked questions about the techniques so I could understand why I needed to carry out each aspect of the protocol. After a tiring day of being in the field, I was still curious - my supervisor and I would often spend our car journeys sharing ideas and discussing what we could do to improve the quality of our data.
Collaborating with a team of international ecologists, was definitely the best part of the entire project. Not only did I get to engage with like-minded individuals in the field but I also had the opportunity learn about their cultural traditions, food, politics, and music over the dinner table. We identified each others strengths and used this to delegate tasks so we could complete tasks efficiently.
Towards the end of the trip I finally felt like the Imposter syndrome had faded. Although I am a first-year undergraduate student, I am curious, determined and motivated - it was these qualities that allowed me to fulfil my ambitions for the project.
Now I've told you all about my experience in Costa Rica...here are some photos of wildlife!
I have so many more stories to tell and photos to share so please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions!
