Rethinking Measurement : Uncovering Biases in Labor Market Gaps
Do we measure bias, or people reacting to being measured? As a Laidlaw Scholar at Tufts, I tested this in hiring. On a freelancing platform, recruiters either knew it was a study or thought it was a normal job task. We asked: Does disclosure change ratings of men vs. women?

In the “real job” group, men got a small boost in callbacks and pay. When recruiters knew it was a study, that boost mostly went away, and women’s results stayed about the same. This suggests that telling people they’re in a study can hide bias.
