Research Report: Optimising Formability and Sustainability in AA6082 Stamping

Can we make car parts lighter, stronger, and more precise without increasing factory energy costs and carbon footprints?
That was the core question behind my recent Laidlaw Scholars research project at Imperial College London. Working with thermo-mechanical finite element simulations in AutoForm, I set out to engineer the hot stamping process for AA6082 aluminium alloys, a key material in modern vehicle manufacturing.
By taking a holistic approach that combined structural section analysis (thinning, springback, wrinkling) with localized industrial energy tariffs and emission factors from Ningbo, China, the results showed that smart numerical optimization can drastically improve both part quality and sustainability.
