Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world. They provide habitat and shelter for over 1 million species, protecting coastlines from storms and erosion and offering opportunitiesfor tourism, employment and the discovery of new medicines. Globally, around half a million peopleare dependent on coral reefs for food, income and protection. However, anthropogenic activitiescontributing to global warming has meant that these abundant ecosystems are under threat. Since2008, over 14% of the world’s coral reefs have died as a direct result of climate-change. The GreatBarrier Reef has lost over 50% of it’s corals since 1995.
