Las Cruces and El Paso, Texas, are home to some of the busiest court systems in the United States, with El Paso alone having more than 600 cases each month. As a border city with Ciudad Juárez, El Paso’s courts primarily handle immigration-related charges, often focusing on efficiency and rapidity. My research focuses on observing how these proceedings unfold, the barriers defendants face in understanding legal language, and the level of transparency & accountability present within the system. By documenting both courtroom practices and community perspectives, I aim to highlight how legal processes shape people’s lives/futures and to explore ways to make courtrooms more accessible, equitable, and transparent for all.
