This summer, I had the privilege of working at the Kritzer Lab at Tufts University, where I investigated the effects of small-molecule inhibitors of autophagy for future use in ovarian cancer treatments. With this research, I developed novel compounds to inhibit the proteins LC3B and GABARAP, which are essential to autophagy, a cellular process used to degrade and dispel waste. By inhibiting autophagy, current treatments will be better able to penetrate ovarian cancer cells and prevent the deadly effects of patient relapse and drug resistance.
