This week, I worked on establishing roles for my team members and began working on the five deliverables that are a part of this project. First, we had our first meeting about what aspect of the project they were most interested in working on. This allowed me to better assess which of these five deliverables would be the most interesting to the other interns and assign them to the correct projects.
Next, I started working on writing the guide to set up a business in Irvine. I first created a table of contents that laid out the fundamental processes needed to open a business in the city. Then, I worked on researching the various steps and writing out the city, county, state, and national resources available to small business owners. Furthermore, I looked at the various codes and laws at the different levels of government to ensure I mentioned any notable requirements.
Finally, I created a new communication channel for the translation team. I also offered this team's translation abilities to my coworkers who are also working on various flyers with key city information. My hope is that this allows the information and graphics we are creating will reach as many Irvine citizens as possible.
The biggest challenge this week was figuring out which of the deliverables to prioritize. I considered how long each of these deliverables would take to create, then wrote up a project timeline from there. This timeline helped me visualize which of these projects to prioritize when offering opportunities for the other interns to get more involved in my LiA project.
The order of completion I determined is as follows: (1) create a guide to setting up a business in Irvine and create text and graphics that our city clerk can post to the official City of Irvine website, (2) create a one-pager describing the resources available to people looking to start or maintain a business in Irvine, (3) write a memo for Councilmember Kim which will call for the establishment of a new team of staff dedicated to concierge services, and (4) translate all resources into the top spoken languages in Irvine.
