Field Journal Week 1

  1. How have the workshops and discussions on leadership this week changed your understanding of what leadership means?
I have found our leadership conversations to be super informative this week. I've undergone many different leadership trainings for different programs and seminars which have focused on personal development, public speaking, confidence boosting etc. However, most of my previous trainings and leadership roles have worked to develop soft skills in group management and efficiency as opposed to thinking about team building -- and how styles of leadership can impact it.  Learning that I am somewhere between an analytical and emotional (forget exact word) leader resonated greatly with me, as it reflects much of my decision making processes.  By talking with other Laidlaw scholars with the same leadership style I felt that I learned a lot about how to deal with the challenges and advantageous of being social and passion driven, while also adapting to other leadership styles.
  2. How might you imagine applying one of the four ways of leading during your summer on campus?
I think that the different styles of leading will be super helpful for my research, specifically leading from the front and leading from beside, as these two skills will help me conduct research and work collaboratively with my advisor. To conduct original research within neighborhoods requires a lot of executive out from leadership in recruitment and research conduct. But by using my grad student mento, personal librarian and advisor I hope to work together to reshape my ideals and use expert advice to facilitate the best outcome.
  3. What is everyone most excited about engaging in as part of their summer research project?
I'm super excited to create neighborhood profiles through immersion in NYC neighborhoods. Exploring NYC is one of my favorite activities, so being able cto do this through the cont3ext of invesitgating political polarization will be so exciting and I am eager to see what I learn!
