My research topic during the Laidlaw Program is to test whether we can track the event segmentation process through pupillometry. Our brain divides up continuous experience into separate events when we encode them into our memories, and this is called the event segmentation process. An event boundary is the transitions between these different segments. In my research, we collect data by using an eye-tracking system to measure the subject’s changes in pupil size when researchers play them audio clips of pre-recorded stories. Afterwards, we process and analyze the data to determine whether changes in pupil sizes can be a meaningful indication of where event boundaries occur.
