Community and Project Management Executive, Laidlaw Foundation

Embracing the vibrant world of the Laidlaw Foundation, first as a Laidlaw Scholar at Oxford University's Saïd Business School and now as the Community and Project Management Executive, has been an exciting journey. Nurturing our vast online community, working closely with partners, and supporting internal projects are just a few highlights of my role at the Foundation. Working at the Foundation and on my startup ConnectU is something that I cherish. Off-duty, I'm often found at the piano🎹, mesmerized in a theatre🎭, or painting away the night with friends🎨.  If our paths align in interests or work, why not connect? Ping me, and let's connect on LinkedIn.

Mukhambetzhan Berikuly

Student, Durham University

About Me My name is Muhammed and I'm currently studying for my Bachelor's degree in Economics with Management at Durham University. Sustainability is a lifelong passion of mine, and I'm especially interested in exploring circular economy solutions. Areas of Focus For my final year research project, I'm analysing circular business models being adopted by small and medium enterprises across the UK. I'm looking specifically at capabilities in areas like supply chain management, manufacturing techniques, waste reduction strategies, and designing for the long-term. Research Goals By highlighting real case studies of circular SMEs, my aim is to identify best practices that can help more companies make the transition. I want to provide actionable insights for policymakers and businesses seeking to build a stronger, greener local economy. Additional Interests In my spare time I enjoy learning about new technologies like AI and blockchain that could enable greater circularity. I'm also passionate about spreading awareness of sustainability issues to help drive societal change. Get In Touch I'd love to discuss circular innovations with anyone interested in supporting this growing movement. Please feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat or have any feedback on my research. I'm always looking to learn more!
Trisha Bhujle

Laidlaw Scholar, Laidlaw Foundation

Hello! I’m Trisha, a second-year student at Cornell University from Texas, USA. I’m majoring in Environment and Sustainability with a concentration in Food Systems, and minoring in International Relations, International Trade and Development, and Climate Change. My interests in combining my enduring passions for writing and wildlife conservation have driven me to explore multiple perspectives on highly-controversial issues such as trophy hunting, retaliatory animal killings, and illegal wildlife crime. Thus, during my first summer as a Laidlaw Scholar and as a member of the Morally Contested Conservation team, I wrote a literature review on the interconnectedness of climate change and human-wildlife conflicts in East and southern Africa — a project I plan to further during my LiA summer in Tanzania. As an aspiring environmental policymaker and journalist, I am passionate about making technical scientific information more accessible to the general public. At Cornell, I am an Institute of Politics and Global Affairs Scholar, through which I interact with policymakers monthly to discuss pervasive issues in international politics. I also speak Marathi, Spanish, and Swahili at varying levels of fluency and plan to continue to grow my language skills to communicate environmental issues across continents and cultures.  For fun, I love to turn even the most mundane materials into recycled art, spend hours on end working through jigsaw puzzles, and go for runs while listening to podcasts. And as a diehard foodie who loves to travel, I’m always looking for recommendations of places to visit or new recipes to try!  The Laidlaw Scholars Program has been an invaluable component of my undergraduate experience. The friendships I’ve made, as well as the research and language skills I’ve begun to develop, have encouraged me to continue to ask and seek answers to complicated questions about global affairs and environmental science. If anyone has questions about the Laidlaw Program, is interested in collaborating, or just wants to say hello, please feel free to email me at trb238@cornell.edu. I’d love to say hi, and I hope we can meet in person someday! Watch this video for a brief introduction to myself.

Anna Rose Marion

Student Researcher, Cornell University

Hi, I’m Anna Rose Marion, and I am interested in climate change from a cultural and policy standpoint. I am double majoring in Environment & Sustainability and Anthropology at Cornell University. I plan to pursue graduate work and a career focused on climate solutions. I am from a small, coastal community in New Hampshire. I like to spend my spare time dancing and enjoying the outdoors.  My Laidlaw research is focused on exploring a potential new solution to promote climate mitigation and resilience in Southeast Asia. I will be working on a project to investigate the sociopolitical and technological potential and obstacles of using algae for biofuel and carbon emissions sequestration in the Philippines. I am specifically interested in exploring the sociocultural ramifications of algal mitigation and adaptation strategies. I plan to pose the question: how could algae technologies impact traditional human-environmental relationships in The Philippines? I’m interested in whether these impacts are influenced by the presence and quality of community engagements and partnerships, and who benefits most from these technologies. Evaluating new climate mitigation proposals is crucial to determine whether they are well-suited for various global contexts and whether they will positively affect those most vulnerable.  I’d love to chat with others who are interested in the intersection of climate and culture! Watch this video for a brief introduction of myself!
Chico Paulics Bresler

Student, University of St Andrews

Hi, I'm Chico, a University of St Andrews student starting third year. I study Physics and Philosophy, being interested above all in the fundamental interpretations of quantum mechanics, metaphysics, and the impacts of non-determinism to the existence of free will. My Laidlaw research project was focused on analysing vanadium dioxide layered meta surfaces in search of epsilon near zero materials with tunable properties, utilising transfer matrix methods. Outside of my studies and project I enjoy reading, playing board games, chess and video-games, cooking and sometimes writing. Get in contact if you would like to chat about anything mentioned above or any subject you are passionate about. :)

Daniel Caves-San José

Durham University - Studying International Relations, History and Theology. Student Librarian and Decolonisation Intern, Durham University

Hi, I'm Daniel Caves-San José! I'm originally from Spain but I've lived in the UK most of my life, now studying Combined Honours in Social Sciences (International Relations, History, and Theology) at Durham University. My passion is interlinking different disciplines together around explorations of the Middle East and North Africa, such as securitisation, virtual diplomacy, and the anthropology of Islam, which I hope to continue to develop further as I learn Arabic. My research project (and poster) were on water security in southeast Iraq, and the role of diplomatic relations with Iran, as well as the domestic political contexts of the two countries in causing environmental degradation, followed by an exploration of the socio-economic impacts this has on the traditionally isolated Marsh Arab population in the region. I'd really appreciate connecting on LinkedIn and sharing our experiences and ideas with one-another.
Kayla Kim

Hello! I was Laidlaw scholar in 2019, and I studied national, regional, and local identity in northern Tajikistan through the lens of women's fashion.  For a year after graduating, I worked for the UN Mine Action Service which removes landmines from conflict and post-conflict regions. I then worked for the Laidlaw Foundation 2021-22 and completed a Master's Degree in Anthropology and Development Management at the London School of Economics. Now I'm working with the UN on innovative finance for biodiversity conservation, focusing on marine ecosystems. Please feel free to reach out on the network, on LinkedIn, or by email. I'm always happy to meet new people and chat.
