The Laidlaw Scholars Raleigh Tanzania Expedition Aug 2019

This summer, The Laidlaw Foundation partnered with Raleigh International to offer a team of 9 Laidlaw Scholars and local young people the opportunity to volunteer in Tanzania on a 4 week project. This post will cover the purpose of the trip and what they got up to whilst they were away.

Laidlaw partnered with Raleigh this summer to get the Scholars out of the classroom and into the field, where they would put their leadership skills into practice whilst making a positive contribution towards sustainable development. It was the chance for the scholars  to have an immersive experiential leadership experience in a different and diverse context to build their skills, knowledge and value set as future leaders.

The scholars spent their time working to help rural communities in Tanzania improve access to safe water and sanitation, along with promoting good hygiene practices which is crucial to reducing the spread of disease. The scholars achieved an incredible amount in a relatively short space of time. They built a sanitation block for teachers at a local school, ran awareness raising sessions as part of our SWASH clubs programme and built a hand washing station for local school pupils.

We are very grateful that Lord Laidlaw himself was able to visit the project and observe the incredible work the Scholars were contributing towards.
