Marian Wright Edelman (1939-) is an American lawyer and civil rights activist who founded the Children’s Defense Fund - a nonprofit organisation focused on advocating for children's rights and championing "policies and programs that lift children out of poverty; protect them from abuse and neglect; and ensure their access to health care, quality education and a moral and spiritual foundation."
Her honours include a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1985) and several humanitarian awards. In 2000 Edelman received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for her writings.
