Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English Victorian novelist. She is best known for her novel Middlemarch.
Evans used a pen name to evade the stereotype of lighthearted romance novels written by women, and to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic.

My sister-in-law who is a completely amazing year 6 teacher suggested this quote. I find it totally inspiring; both because it is what she has dedicated her career to doing - planting the seeds of character and learning in her pupils so that they can grow into happy, fulfilled, contributing adults - and because it reminds me that it is not enough to wish for a better world, we have to do something about it.
Also of course George Eliot is a legend. I want to feel hope that today an author wouldn't have to hide their identity not to be stereotyped but I am not absolutely sure. What do you think?
