Week Four of LiA: Advocating for Methamphetamine Policy Reforms
Posting this a bit late! Apologies for the delay; I forgot to actually post my reflection.
Last week, I achieved the tangible outcome of coding my first interview and confirming three more critical interviews with individuals with lived experience either serving those who consume methamphetamine or consuming methamphetamine themselves. The final timeline for the methamphetamine policy roadmap has been finalized, and I made significant progress on the structure of the final recommendation sections. I am proud of my communications proactivity and project leadership this week. A more optimized daily routine wherein I began work at the same time each day and engaged in more scheduled meetings was critical for my success. The value of “curious” was most visible in my leadership this week, enabling me to dig deeply into the interview coding process. I did not experience tension between any values.
The character dimension of “drive” was most tested, given the fact that my ability to plan and analyze interviews in a manner which actually serves the project is wholly dependent upon my capacity for discipline and rigorous adherence to methodology. Judgment mattered a great deal in deciding which aspects of the past and future interviews to prioritize for incorporation into my work. I responded well under pressure, particularly in complex meetings conducted in Spanish. I relied the most on the capacity of process, for the same reasons that the character dimension of “drive” was most tested (see above). I felt significantly stretched in my performance given the occasional difficulties of expressing my ideas in another language.
I recently made the decision to significantly re-work the section of my report detailing the current gaps in the public healthcare landscape relevant to methamphetamine use. Such a decision set my timeline back signficantly, but stood out in its importance for the final project. I was mostly facilitating work this week; next week, I will be more-so in a leadership position as the number of interviews with impacted individuals increases. My contribution had the intended impact of magnifying the voices of these individuals in the advocacy process.
Next week, I will make the behavioral adjustment of bringing a more foreward-thinking approach to the technical and methodological aspects of the synthesis process. I will intentionally workshop the value of speed. Finally, I will take the concrete action of planning out my entire week’s analytical process.
