LIA at Maggie’s Barts- Log 3

As of this week, I am halfway through my LIA placement at Maggie’s Barts. My third week has brought new challenges and opportunities. Throughout the week, I participated in the center drop-in counseling, and engaged with visitors as they used the space during down-periods in their care. Additionally, I have been working to develop a directory of community based activities into which regular visitors can transition once they no longer require cancer-specific supportive care. I have compiled 50 pages of activities in the areas of exercise, arts, social clubs, and skill development, and will aim to double the length by the end of next week. Gaining deeper insight into the community service landscapes of various neighborhoods has provided new and valuable context for my understanding of Maggies’ role as a care provider: Maggie’s is unique in its “just come in approach”- no appointment or referral is needed to access supports.
