My first year research project was focused on learning about the lived experiences of 1.5-generation immigrants, and their stories on how they were able to adjust into their host culture. Their stories of resilience and adaptation captivated me, and I felt a strong want to translate my knowledge into action. For my Leadership-in-Action project, I knew I wanted to make a meaningful impact, particularly in the often overlooked ethnic minority communities in Hong Kong. These communities face significant challenges, from language barriers to lack of exposure and access to opportunities, and I was determined to help bridge that gap.

This brought me to The Zubin Foundation, a non-governmental organization dedicated to helping low-income ethnic minorities in Hong Kong. They provide resources and equip individuals with skills that are needed to thrive. I was looking forward to join their mission and contribute to such an important cause.

On my very first day as an intern with the Opportunity Bank team, I was immediately swept up in the whirlwind of activity. After a brief introduction to their mission, I discovered that their work goes far beyond surface-level assistance. They actively engage with government officials to advocate for systemic changes that foster genuine integration of ethnic minorities into the broader Hong Kong community.

My tasks for the day were varied. I dove into the annual impact report, which highlighted the profound differences they’ve made in the lives of underprivileged ethnic minorities. I also had the chance to craft and refine social media posts promoting their weekly gatherings for the elderly, giving them a place to meet others, whilst learning invaluable skills. Finally, I compiled a list of past sponsors—corporations and individuals alike—who have rallied behind Zubin’s mission.

Even on that bustling first day, I felt a deep sense of belonging and purpose within the team. I’m eager to immerse myself further in their work and to engage directly with the diverse ethnic minority groups we serve. The journey has just begun, and I can’t wait to see the impact we can create together!
