The project Telling Operatic Stories: Race, ethics, and authenticity, is centered on Opera North's upcoming productions of Orpheus. Orpheus, a collaboration with South Asian Arts UK and composer Jasdeep Singh Degun, reimagines Monteverdi's L'Orfeo. This project will combine opera analysis, contemporary music ethics, postcolonial studies, and critical theory, to explore encounters with diverse perspectives, memories, and future visions. It seeks to delve into the pressing issues of opera storytelling, audience reception, storytelling rights, and fostering authentic creative voices. By examining questions of who has the right to tell certain stories and how organizations facilitate or hinder genuine creative expression, the project aims to animate and underpin the discussions around these ethical dilemmas.
