Project Outline: Telling the stories of Colonial Populations in the French Resistance through podcasts
This project will contribute to efforts to identify members of the French Internal Resistance in Paris (1940-1945) who came from French North Africa . I will examine how the identities of these men and women (race, citizenship status, religion etc) influenced their experiences in resistance groups and movements. For example, the roles they had and their interactions with both their comrades and their enemies during the War.
I will begin my research in La Service Historique de la Défense, Vincennes - the French military archives in Paris, consulting the files of a number of Resistance fighters. I will also access French state databases, military archival files, official written histories and documentation about these members' resistance groups and units to develop an overall concept of their roles in the French Internal Resistance and their lives pre- and post- war.
My research output will consist of a series of podcasts that will share the stories of the identified men and women with the general public, particularly school students.
This project aims to change ideas about who took part in resistance action during the Second World War, in an effort to decolonise knowledge across society by diversifying and changing the way in which the War is commemorated.
Once the podcasts have been made available, research impact will be measured through download figures, other forms of audience engagement and uptake from French partners.
I am incredibly excited to begin this research, and I hope to share more soon!
