LiA Week 6: Reflecting on Law and Compassion
Reflecting on my LiA experience, I observed that each individual came with their own set of challenges and emotions – they may be sentimental, provocative, frustrated or sad, and sometimes memories may cloud their recollection, making it hard to gather accurate information about the case.
I vividly recall a meeting with an AP who had suffered an injury while working as a cleaner at a mall. My supervisor had briefed me that she was one of the most emotional clients he had encountered, so it had been challenging to take her instructions in the past. As she signed the settlement agreement, tears filled her eyes once again – but this time, they were tears of joy.
This was one of the many instances at LAD which served as poignant reminders of the importance of handling these cases with compassion and empathy, because behind the bundles and court documents, are real people hoping to gain their access to justice.
