LiA Week 6 Log
My final week of the Leadership in Action project was rich. It was a time to wrap up, reflect, and say goodbye to the people and places that have shaped this journey. Each moment, whether in service or in rest, felt significant as I prepared to transition out of a season marked by deep engagement, leadership, and growth.
On Monday, I helped with our regular food box distribution before taking time to rest. After weeks of ongoing service and leadership, it was important to slow down and reflect on all that has happened. This intentional pause helped me recognize how far the project, and I, have come since it began.
Tuesday was a full and fulfilling day. I helped prepare hot meals, washed dishes, and assisted with deliveries to a homeless encampment known as “The Farms” and Hawaiian homes in Lahaina. Later in the evening, I also attended class and said goodbye to many of my good friends who would go to New Zealand on a cultural exchange trip for the next few weeks.
Wednesday was a milestone moment as I returned to court to witness a successful outcome in a clients case where a restraint order was granted for a mother and daughter facing abuse from the father. After weeks of working closely with our legal team and walking with her through the process, it was incredibly rewarding to see justice and protection granted. This experience solidified my belief in the power of advocacy and reminded me that behind every case is a person deserving dignity and care.
On Thursday, we delivered hot meals again to families in Lahaina, continuing the quiet, faithful work of meeting basic needs. That evening, I attended one final YGA session and said goodbye to Auntie Chevy, Justin, and Lindsey who were also travelling to New Zealand and who played such a unique role in shaping my time here through their hospitality and encouragement.
Friday was a slower office day, where I helped close out remaining tasks and tie up loose ends.
Saturday brought the final major event of my project: a legal clinic in partnership with Maui Mediation, Maui Housing Hui, Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii and Legal Aid. This event brought attorneys from around the islands to offer legal advice and education to local residents dealing with housing injustice. After weeks of planning and preparation, it was rewarding to see the clinic come to life and witness the impact of what we had built for the lives of dozens of Maui residents.
This week, I learned that the end of a project can be just as important as its beginning. Finishing well, by tying up tasks, honouring relationships, and creating space for reflection, requires intentionality and humility. I saw that leadership isn’t only about what you build but how you leave things. Letting go is hard, especially when you’ve invested so deeply, but this week reminded me that the most meaningful leadership is rooted in stewardship, not control. As I step away, I do so with deep gratitude for all I’ve learned and with a renewed commitment to continue walking with integrity, empathy, and courage wherever I serve next.
