As my time comes to an end at Rainbow Faith and Freedom, I find myself immensely grateful not only for the experience of working at the organization but working outside of the United States. During one of my final weeks in Canada, I had the opportunity to celebrate both Canada Day and the Fourth of July in the same week. This urged me to reflect on the differences between the two countries and reminded me of an earlier conversation I had with a coworker. In America, we so often refer to our demographic makeup as a melting pot, epitomizing our motto,"e pluribus unum," or out of many, one. But my coworker recently reflected that while we in the States refer to our diversity through the melting pot metaphor, Canadians choose to refer to theirs as a mosaic. This was profound to me, as the mosaic does not require one to conform to one end product, but instead allows each individual to remain their own distinct selves while collaborating to become part of a larger end product. I hope that I can transfer this lesson as I finish my time in Toronto and return to the US. I'm extremely grateful to all of my coworkers and supervisors at RFF as well as Laidlaw for providing me with this learning opportunity.
