LiA Week 5
Despite me finishing my LiA officially in June, I still continue to work with Kabataan Alliance. Starting in August, Kabataan Alliance met again to start a campaign in the name of Tanggol Migrante. Tanggol Migrante is a group of Filipino immigrant rights organizations who function with the mission of fighting back against illegal recruitment and labor trafficking in Canada and the United States. The meeting that was hosted this week consisted of discussing a plan in carrying out training and practices that would help bring awareness and easy means of actions in Filipino communities. The first segment was an ICE training over the weekend that would train organization leaders on how to hold Know Your Rights training in school and work organizations. With the increase of ICE raids in the United States, the efforts of community organizers to ensure their peers know their rights is of the utmost importance. Additionally, there were calls to talk about typhoon relief in the Philippines after it got hit by Typhoon Emong in late July, resulting in over PHP 1.1 billion in damages and affecting over 215,000 people. The call included calls for donations, clothing and food drives, as well as means to spread awareness on the behalf of those who lost almost everything from the disaster. It felt nice to finally catch up with and reunite with people I marched in the parade with, as well as prepare for the upcoming school year by joining the Planning Team for KA’s Student Leadership Summit. The meeting discussing that upcoming event will be the subject of my final LiA post before the reflection.
