My first two weeks in Rio de Janeiro as an IVHQ volunteer have been nothing short of extraordinary—a journey filled with profound challenges and heartening breakthroughs. Engaged in a sports volunteering program at the favela community centre in Morro de Providência, Gamboa. I embarked with the goal of promoting well-being, fostering inclusivity, and providing a positive distraction from the community's hardships.

The initial days were marked by a stark reality check. All of my roommates being robbed at machete point on the very first night sent a wave of fear through me, testing my resolve. However, I chose to stay committed, knowing that persistence and dedication were crucial in making a difference.

Integration into the favela community was initially met with scepticism and wary stares, understandable given the challenges and uncertainties residents faced daily. Yet, within just a day or two, I began to see a remarkable shift. The children, initially reserved or cautious, quickly warmed up to me as they realized my commitment and genuine desire to connect. Their smiles and eagerness to participate in our sports activities became the highlight of my days. Despite the prevalent hardships, the resilience and spirit of the children shone brightly. Their enthusiasm and openness reaffirmed my belief in the transformative power of positive engagement and support. Witnessing their progress—both in sports skills and in building trust—was immensely rewarding and motivated me to push further.

The contrast of seeing young children waking up on the streets underscored the stark realities of poverty and adversity in Rio's favelas, but it also fuelled my determination to provide the youth with positive alternatives and opportunities for growth. Reflecting on these weeks, I've grown not only in my ability to navigate challenges but also in my capacity for empathy and understanding. Leadership, for me, has evolved into leading by example—demonstrating dedication, empathy, and unwavering support in every interaction with the children and the community.

Looking forward, I see immense potential for further positive impact. Strengthening support systems for volunteers, enhancing safety measures, and deepening cultural understanding could enrich the experience for both volunteers and the community. Addressing systemic issues like poverty and lack of opportunities requires sustained effort and collaboration with local stakeholders, but these first two weeks have shown me the profound impact of consistent dedication and genuine connection.

My initial experience in Rio has been a testament to resilience, hope, and the transformative power of community engagement. The children's rapid acceptance and growth have been nothing short of phenomenal, reaffirming my belief in the potential for positive change, even in the face of significant challenges. I am committed to continuing my journey here with renewed vigour, eager to contribute to their well-being and development, and inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead.
