Benazir Bhutto (1953-2007) was the first woman leader of a Muslim nation in modern history. She served two terms as prime minister of Pakistan, in 1988–90 and in 1993–96.

On this day in 2007, she returned to her home country after eight years of self-imposed exile. Her return was nearly cut short when a bomber attacked her motorcade, killing numerous supporters. She was assassinated that December in a similar attack.

Following her death, Bhutto's political success has made her an icon for women's rights.
