Jefferson Gonzalez-Flores Introductory Post

Laidlaw Scholars Network: Second Cohort 2023
Like

Hey everyone, my name is Jefferson Gonzalez-Flores, I am a rising sophomore in the Class of 2026 for the College of Arts and Sciences. My major is Political Economy with a specialized focus in domestic studies. However, I also have aspirations of gaining a minor in Business Administration either through a joint-MSB program or through the College's preexisting structures.

In regard to the fellowship that I am now a part of, my summer research plans are to conduct a comprehensive study into the world of Business Law. By revolving my attention onto the complexities of financial auditing standards, my research topic will hold a keen spotlight on the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act, a legal provision that dictates how any corporation should present itself through its three financial statements.

By combining the educational sectors of law, finance and international affairs, this research project will explain the transnational differences of monetary transparency in the United States and abroad. Using the American application of the law as precedence, I will to juxtapose this baseline standard to the European powerhouse that is Spain. Bringing in aspects of history as well, this  secondary research analysis will have a breadth of knowledge that hopefully enlightens the public.

Since my future career aspirations are to become a Corporate Business Lawyer, this six-week project is an amazing opportunity to explore deeper into my dream vocational field and really understand the boundaries that everyone must abide by on a daily basis. Working alongside the support of mentors from back home, the advise of my faculty advisor, Professor David Burke of the Economics Department here at Georgetown University, and the encouragement from rest of my peers in both cohorts, I am extremely to get started on this endeavor.

While my goals are ambitious and the deliverable due date is fast approaching, I know that I am capable enough to complete all my projects in a timely and orderly fashion. Thank you for your interest, I look forward to sharing weekly updates on how my progress is going, so be on the lookout.
