Field Journal: Week 3

This week I continued my development work with the Orbtronics team and led a big mentoring session with the robotics team. The students are enthusiastic but can be rowdy and distracted at times.

Week Three:

What does a typical day look like for you? Has your work in a community to this point introduced you to any new fields or topics that are of interest to you?  How, if at all, has your work narrowed since the beginning of the project? Aside from a narrative description, upload a photo of your workplace, a video and/or another media submission!

A typical day for me looks like getting up at 8:30, heading to the office and starting to work on the local development projects with the team. On some days I run a class or a mentorship for the local schools here in the afternoon. On Saturdays I start at 10 am and I work with the robotics team here and try to help them achieve their goal of placing in the top ten globally.

The work I do in the community has introduced me to the field of teaching. As a researcher, my work tends to be quite disconnected from teaching, and the only sharing I do is formal and academic. I've found it really interesting to share the knowledge I have in this field with people who are far less experienced than I am, rather than with direct peers. The work with the robotics team has also been amazing, I'm part of the robotics lab at Columbia, so it's great to mentor people who share similar passions.

My work hasn’t narrowed at all, in fact it has semi widened in scope. I think the team here seeing that I am semi proficient in working with students has given me more responsibility in that aspect in addition to my work in development. However, I’ve really been enjoying the extra responsibilities, though the kids can be very rowdy at times.

I made them create a timeline and start getting familiar with the engineering supplies.
