The interdisciplinary nature of Laidlaw has allowed me to view my project from a multitude of different perspectives. While it is easy to become siloed in your field, especially in very disciplinary areas in science, it is important to zoom out and understand where your research fits in the broader context of the world at large. I have been considering how resource recovery, membranes, and the field of environmental engineering can be utilized to achieve a more circular economy and improve lives at large. I would also like to expand my research to consider how different cultures utilize natural resources differently, and the technologies and methods that can be incorporated in tandem with these findings to come to new solutions for water quality and resource recovery.

I anticipate a challenge in getting started is maintaining the discipline to work on my project consistently over long periods of time. Without variation in my schedule, and having different physical places to be, it can be difficult for me to maintain discipline and hold myself accountable. I think that keeping myself on track with what my overall goal is and keeping the mission in mind will allow me to face these challenges.
