Towards the end of my internship, I arrived at the office one morning to see a man in worn clothes sitting next to one of the case managers’ desks. My boss introduced me to him, and I found out he had been released from prison two hours ago. The case manager had picked him up from prison and taken him to the office to help him find housing and other basic necessities. As part of that process, the case manager asked me to help set up the man’s phone. I spent the next hour activating the sim card, figuring out the settings, and then showing the man how to use it. He was incarcerated before smartphones were a thing, so I showed him how to do everything on it. Teaching him everything from the basics like how to use maps, to helping him send his first ever text to his wife, was fun and rewarding. Later I was walking down the street and a car honked as it passed me. When I turned, I saw him waving through the window with a big smile on his face as he was being taken to his new housing.
