Leadership is a critical aspect of life. Whether it's in business, personal relationships, or even in our communities, effective leadership is necessary to achieve success. The ability to lead requires certain skills, including effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities. To acquire these skills, individuals must undergo proper training and education which we, as Laidlaw Scholars, have been fortunate enough to access through attending a residential at Cumberland Lodge, centred around leadership.

Recently, I attended this residential at Cumberland Lodge with my LSE cohort and it was an experience of a lifetime. The program was designed to provide us with an immersive experience that would help us to develop leadership skills in a practical and interactive way. The training was held in a beautiful location, surrounded by nature, which provided the perfect environment for learning and reflection. We went on walks whilst discussing what leadership meant to us, collaborating our ideas and solutions as to how we could solve current problems and inequalities.

The residential consisted of a series of workshops and team-building activities that were aimed at developing critical leadership skills. One of the most important aspects of the training was learning about what it means to lead others. We heard from an LSE alum who founded his own company which now has multiple offices and employees. He kindly shared his insights into what makes a good leader and how to communicate effectively with others, how to listen actively, and how to convey our message clearly and concisely.

The program also emphasized problem-solving skills. We learned about different problem-solving techniques and strategies that we could use to solve complex real-world problems. The training provided us with an opportunity to apply these skills in a real-life setting through team-building activities and open discussions.

One of the most memorable aspects of the residential was the team-building and bonding activities. We shared a room with a scholar from the new cohort, ate our meals together and participated in games and quizzes.  were divided into teams and given different challenges to solve. This required us to work together, communicate effectively, and make decisions as a team. These activities taught us about the importance of teamwork and collaboration in leadership. I am happy to have made lifelong connections and relationships with my peers following the trip.

Overall, the residential leadership training was an unforgettable experience. It provided us with an opportunity to develop critical leadership skills in a practical and interactive way. The program taught us about effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, and teamwork. These skills are crucial for success in any leadership role, and the program provided us with the tools and knowledge to become effective leaders.

In conclusion, attending the residential leadership training is a fantastic way to develop critical leadership skills. It provides an opportunity to learn in a practical and interactive way, surrounded by nature, which enhances the learning experience. If you're looking to develop your leadership skills, I would highly recommend attending a residential leadership training with the Laidlaw Foundation who I would like to thank for this opportunity.
