Working with a team of classmates, Columbia Libraries, and a faculty advisory board, fellow Laidlaw Scholar Suan Lee and I are excited to be launching the Columbia Journal of Asia (CJA), inspired by our Laidlaw research on South Asia last summer. CJA is an open-access, peer-reviewed platform for creative and academic pieces on Asia, the Asian diaspora, and comparative studies broadly related to Asia. It addresses an urgent need for more representation and understanding of Asian narratives, not in isolation, but as an integral part of the study of humanities and social sciences in academic and artistic circles.

Given that many Laidlaw Scholars are doing such interesting research related to Asia and the Asian diaspora, we wanted to share our call for submissions on the network! CJA operates on an inclusive view of Asia, which includes regions traditionally demarcated as Eurasia and the Middle East, alongside South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia; we are also multidisciplinary, publishing works across the arts, social sciences, and humanities.

We welcome both academic papers (>4,000 words) and creative works (<2,000 words), which includes and is not limited to poetry, prose, and original translations. Undergraduate students of all majors, tracks, and class years at any accredited university are encouraged to submit.

The regular deadline for submissions is Feb. 28, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. The priority deadline is Feb. 14, 2022, by 11:59 PM EST. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis, and all applicants will hear back about the status of their submission by mid-March.
