Greetings from Emma and Lucy! We are very excited to be working together to launch and to spearhead the Laidlaw Scholars Alumni Society!

The idea for the Alumni Society emerged during a conversation with Susanna V. Kempe at the EQUALL Conference 2020. We thought that there is much scope for collaboration among Laidlaw Undergraduate Scholarship and Laidlaw Women in Business Scholarship alumni from different institutions to create positive change in the world, even after their projects have ended. We wanted to create a platform where generations of Laidlaw Alumni can network and initiate professional discussions, conversations about research, leadership and more. The Laidlaw Foundation is eager to support its Alumni in their endeavours to foster ethical leadership around the world. So, it is with great excitement that we announce that the Alumni Society has been brought to life to achieve these goals.

About Emma

I completed my Laidlaw Undergraduate Scholarship between 2017 and 2018, as part of the first cohort of Scholars at Durham University. I was also the second President of Durham University Laidlaw Society. I am currently studying the Accelerated Legal Practice Course at BPP University, in preparation for commencing my Training Contract at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP in August 2020. I am particularly interested in women in leadership and business, commercial law and social entrepreneurship, and would be delighted to hear from others with similar interests.

About Lucy

I am a final year biology student at the University of Oxford. In summer 2019, I carried out my Laidlaw research project investigating the effectiveness of GM (genetic modification) technology in increasing crop yield. I am passionate about addressing the gap between science and the society and promoting women in leadership. I am also interested in entrepreneurship and startups. My other interests include Ballroom and Latin dancing, yoga and reading. I would always be up for a chat about any of these topics and beyond!
