I love this! I am more familiar with 13th century England than France, but could this treatment have been due to links with Lords/ other nobility?  Commonly those imprisoned in England around the same period were outsiders unknown to the locals and the lord, do we think that is the same case here?

(Also, putting the map in the summary box was a stroke of genius!)
